Beams and Framed Structures Second Edition
Jacques HeymanA FRAMED structure resists the action of applied loads mainly by
bending of the members of the frame. In the analytical work which
follows, all deformations other than those due to bending are neglected;
this is the usual structural assumption for frames. Another assumption
usually made, and accepted here, is that deflexions of the structure
as a whole are small compared with the lengths of the members.
This assumption has important consequences; it will be seen that, if
deformations are negligible, force systems can be superimposed
even if the material of the frame is inelastic. If, in addition, the
material obeys Hooke's Law, then complete solutions can be superimposed.
